Chelsea ready to cut their losses over Boulahrouz

José Mourinho has begun the process of offloading unwanted players by preparing to sell Khalid Boulahrouz to Bayern Munich. Chelsea have agreed a fee of £3.5 million with Bayern for the Holland defender, who cost them £7 million from SV Hamburg less than 12 months ago.

Chelsea’s willingness to accept a substantial loss on Boulahrouz reflects his diminishing status after a poor season at Stamford Bridge. Such was Mourinho’s lack of faith in the 25-year-old that he started only four Barclays Premiership matches in 2007 despite the club’s injury crisis, with the manager preferring to deploy other players out of position at centre back. Having enjoyed a successful 2005-06 season with Hamburg, his standing in Germany is higher, however.
